
The following is a breakdown of requirements needed in order for
an individual to obtain specific levels of flight training in accordance
with Title 14 FAR Part 61. These requirements are the absolute minimums
and do not in any way guarantee issuance of a pilot certificate.
In order to obtain the private pilot certificate you must:
- Be
at least 17 years old (16 years old to solo)
- Be
able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
- Hold
a current third class medical certificate (required to solo)
- Pass
a written test on aeronautical and FAA knowledge test
- Pass
a FAA practical and oral exam after completing the following
minimum requirements in flight
training...
- 40 Hours of training to include 20 hours
with an authorized instructor and 10 hours
solo
flight training.
20
hours of accompanied training to include:
- 3
hours of cross country flight training
- 3
hours of flight training solely by reference to instruments
- 3
hours of night training to include 10 takeoffs and landings at
night to a full stop
- 3
hours of flight training in preparation for the practical test
within 60 days preceding the date of the test.

hours of solo flight training to include:
- 5
hours of solo cross country flight
- One
solo cross country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance
with full stop landings at minimum of 3 airports
- 3
takeoffs and landings to a full stop each with landing involving a
flight in the traffic pattern, at an airport
with an operating control tower.
