The following is a breakdown of requirements needed in order for an individual to obtain specific levels of flight training in accordance with Title 14 FAR Part 61. These requirements are the absolute minimums and do not in any way guarantee issuance of a pilot certificate.

In order to obtain the commercial pilot license you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Hold at least Private Pilot Certificate
  • Hold a current second class medical certificate

    A person who applies for a commercial rating must log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor and must log 250 hours of flight time as a pilot with the following requirements...
  • 100 hours in powered aircraft, 50 of which must be in airplanes
  • 100 hours pilot in command flight time to include at least 50 hours in airplanes and 50 cross country hours (at least 10 in airplanes).
  • 20 hours of training from an authorized instructor on particular maneuvers pertaining to commercial flight.

     

  • 10 hours of instrument training from an authorized instructor
  • 10 hours of training in an aircraft that has retractable landing gear, flaps and a controllable pitch propeller or is turbine powered.
