The following is a breakdown of requirements needed in order for an individual to obtain specific levels of flight training in accordance with Title 14 FAR Part 61. These requirements are the absolute minimums and do not in any way guarantee issuance of a pilot certificate.

To obtain the CFI certificate one must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Hold a current medical certificate
  • Hold at least a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating
  • Log at least 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class of aircraft that is appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought.
